Today we got a bus from Chiang Mai to near the border of Huay Xai, Laos. The bus took over five hours, gotta say it was the most travel sick I've ever felt bus wise. Driving through the mountains winding left and right, my stomach was swaying back and forth. After lying on Nicola I felt a little better and then after stopping for lunch and continuing with journey, singing to myself was the only thing that kept me going; the power of music.
We stopped off at a white temple which was beautiful! The carvings were incredible but the theme seemed to be quite morbid with skulls, alien resurrection aliens and hanging heads off trees, also not a mention a pit of death with reaching hands. Pretty on the surface but perhaps a more menacing message behind that.
When we got toward the border of Thailand, we got our visas etc. and hopped on a boat which took us over to the Laos border. Grabbed a hotel, and some dinner and went for drinks within view of the Mekong River, and watched the sun set with a Beer Laos, absolutely beautiful.
Later, we were drawn into a sandwich place by a Laos girl called King Gong not King Kong... I said we come tomorrow and she had a sign saying order tonight for tomorrow gibbon experience; was the perfect setup. She was so lovely, so we placed our sandwich orders for the trek. Tried a snake whisky shot (whisky with a snake and herbs floating around in it) smelt strong but tasted quite nice! After a browse at some shops and Isaac and Ben trynna pull off a 2pac look with bandanas, we went back to the sandwich shop and King Gong, Noo and Tom kindly invited us for Beer Lao's and snacks, we had logans, chili squid and mushrooms. Yum. Such lovely people telling us about how they are saving for cars and managing hotels when they kept pouring us free beers and foods. Tom said that a good Laos dish is Lud Laos. And that dog is the best meat and snake soup is great! He also said for us to come back when I get married for my honeymoon when I'm thirty haha. Gonna give them a hefty tip tomorrow. Had Lots of fun learning Laos language and naughty words. Such lovely people who work hard and are incredibly hospitable to everyone! Had a great night and will see them tomorrow morning nice and early.
