We made a trip to the Recoleta Cemetery before leaving Buenos Aires. We didn't have enough time in BA to see everything we wanted to, but we didn't want to miss this as it has been named one of the best and most beautiful cemeteries in the world.
It is amazing. It's lucky we saw a photo of the entrance before we arrived because you wouldn't know it was a cemetery - it's huge. The cemetery is set out like a small city with wide pathways lined with street lamps. The graves are large mausoleum style structures, many of which include elaborate sculptures. Several members of the same family are usually within the one mausoleum. It is well known as the resting place for Eva Peron and former Argentinian presidents.
It was fascinating to learn about the history of some of those buried there, such as Rufina Cambaceres. She was 19 years old when she was buried alive after being mistakenly pronounced dead. Rufina suffocated as she tried to escape her coffin, and her grave now contains a sculpture of Rufina opening the door to her own tomb. There is a story that Rufina haunts the cemetery at night, ensuring that noone else suffers as she did.
We have posted a few photos of the cemetery - check them out!
