We arrived in Hong Kong after a 12 hour overnight flight which actually went faster than we thought it would. Our hotel was on Hong Kong island as opposed to the opposite side of the harbour, Kowloon, and was situated in the buzzy central area of Lan Kwai Fong which is near Soho with many restaurants and bars right outside.
On our first afternoon we had a wander around the area and went on the worlds longest escalator up through the streets of Soho to have a drink in one of the local bars which was actually full of Aussie's!! First impressions of HK is just how steep all the streets are and also how humid it is!
As many of you know it is one of Sophie's dreams to see a Panda and as they are very rare there are only a few places in the world to do this. So the following day we took a trip to 'Ocean Park' which is one of the HK theme parks. Here we got to see two Giant Pandas which was really amazing! One of them was fairly lazy and slept most of the time and the other was pretty greedy and ate most of the time! But the second time we went into the enclosure we were very lucky to see them eating bamboo together so got some great photos and made Sophie even more excited!! We also took a cable car to the other side of the park which went over cliffs and the sea so the view was fantastic.
At dusk we took the famous 'Star Ferry' over to Kowloon side of HK which was full of commuters as this is the most traditional way of getting from the city to the mainland. The view from the ferry was amazing and we got to see it both during the daylight and evening when the city lights were on. This side of HK has a traditionally more Chinese feel to it. We had some dinner and went up to a bar called 'Aqua' to see more views of the island at night! You can tell from up here just how many electonic companies are based here with all their signs lit up and there was also strobe lighting from the top of the banks.
For our final day in HK we visited St Johns Cathedral where Sophie's mum and dad were married which really is a beautiful place to see and very peaceful considering how much hussle there is going on around it! We then took the famous 'Peak tram' to the peak of HK island for the best view of the trip yet! The tram literally travels at a a 70 degree angle which was slightly scary but well worth it at the top!
We leave Hong Kong tonight to fly to Perth but have loved the buzz of this city and its friendly people.
