We left Antigua early this morning, and made our way out towards Rio Dulce which is a little town on a lake. On the way we stopped off at Quiriga, which is a set of Mayan ruins just off the highway. Its only one of the smaller ruins but there were still quite a few sculptures and some of them were amazingly well preserved, lots of altars and zoomorphs!! (pictures will be here soon).
From there, we arrived at Rio Dulce by about 3pm and made our way to our cabins right on the water - beautiful!! We got changes straight away, and went for a swim and a cocktail - and these things were huge, they must have been near on a pint!! Gorgeous!
The following day, we had an early start to get the boat over to Livingston which is a Garifuna settlement only accessable by boat. It lies on the mouth to the Caribbean and the Garifuna are a group of people who were originally brought to the area to work as slaves, but they got away and set up their own community - a very long time ago. Anyways nowadays they're still there and they look really different to the rest of the Guatemalan populations as they have a real mixed gene pool, but it was a cool place to see. Like a little bit of the Caribbean in Guatemala, definately recommend it!
Later on sunday, we got the bus up to Flores which is where we will be staying for the night, before heading to Tikal tomorrow.
