Today was a semi- early start to get to my bus for luang prabang (I had booked it through quite a dodgy travel agent so I was hoping the bus was taking me there!) I waited at my designated bus stop at the designated time... No bus. Went to the "travel agent" and he told me to hop on to a waiting tuk tuk that would take me to my "VIP" bus.
VIP was severely overestimating what it actually was. It was a coach with semi-reclinable seats (you may see seat reclinability as a running theme in this blog but it is very important to me and my comfort!) unlike my fellow bus friends I did not have a valid ticket with a seat number and I had to wait until everybody had taken their seats before finding a free one. Of course it was the broken one! It had a stick propping up the chair, and really not doing a very good job of it! Throughout the journey the angry Frenchman behind me (he wasn't angry to start with, but by the end of the journey he was angry) found that when we hit a bump in the road my chair would collapse and my head would fall into his crotch. This happened numerous times and we tried all tricks to try and fix the chair... No luck. My head was quite frequently dropped (with some force) onto this poor man.
So that was a fun 8 hours. Interrupted only by a Laos forest landslide where the road had disappeared down the mountain. We stopped the bus with other vehicles and watched as about 5 JCBs dug out the road. This only took 10 minutes or so, as I was quite glad we were far back in the queue of traffic and did not need to test the newly made mountain road!
After an eventful journey we arrive at the bus station somewhere in the outskirts of the town and I jump on a tuk tuk with a couple of other girls to find a hostel in town. Eventually ending up at spicylaos from recommendations.
After a long day of travelling my fellow dorm buddy and I roamed around the night markets, ate all you can buffet style street food for 1$ and booked a bus to Chaing mai for the following evening. It was then an early night for a big day of exploring tomorrow before my bus.
