25th Aug
The 2 litres of water that we were given when we started trekking were for the WHOLE DAY! We presumed we'd get given more at lunch time. But no, we had just under 8 hours of trekking in the very hot sun with 2 LITRES OF WATER! (We'd been recommended 1 per hour when climbing Kilimanjaro.) We also took some oreos, crisps etc as 'snacks'... which turned out to be our lunch, which was only a 20 minute break with no shade! Not very impressed with that!! Did I mention that the guide had told us we'd be having pancakes for lunch? Yeh, Chinese humour ISN'T FUNNY. Haha but the rest of the day was great.
The steps were almost vertical on the first part of the wall- so sweaty! lol. The walk eventually turned to ruins and we were walking through undergrowth over 4 mountain peaks. Some parts required proper climbing using arms which was fun but scaryyy. Some of the group were struggling so turned around. The Chinese do not mince their words- 'They can't keep up because they are fat'. Charming!
The homestay had some 'communal beds' which looked amazing and cosy, but me and Becca left ourselves until last and must have taken a room in the host's actual house because we had the marriage photo of a lovely couple hanging above our bed!! Very odd. Slept like a baby.
In the morning a man walked through the yard holding a skinned dog covered in blood... oh my goodness. Definitely not ready for that! When we started the trek there was a brilliant look out spot where the railings went into a V shape like the front of a boat so Jamie and I did a titanic pose!
'Happiness is only real when shared'
Over the next week we trekked, sang kareoke, played 'I have never' mixed with musical chairs (#bruises), had a dumpling making lesson, went to a stunning reservoir which looked like something out of a American National Park, fit 35 people in one communal bed then returned to Beijing witnessing the outdoor gyms.
