Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach trip
Caught the bus at 8am and started our journey tp the most northern part of new Zealand - Cape Reinga. Our transport was a 4wheel lorry customised into a luxury coach! We stopped off at a few look our points to take in some amazing scenery...you could see for miles!!!! We then stopped at Doubtless Bay for some breakfast and lunch supplies. Whlst on rounte the driver explained about where we were all the time, giving us the history of land and cultures. We got to 90 mile beach and drove along it for a few miles, we saw loads of kite fishermen and some horses riding along the beach. We then headed to the northern part fo the beach towards Cape Reinga. We passed some sand dunes that were as big as the mountains! We got to Cape reinga and walked along the track to the lighthouse. At this point is where the Tasmin sea and the Pacific Ocean meet...you can literally see the line!!! Our next stop was sand boarding down a very very steep dune. Nearly killed me walking up it....legs were completely dead by the time i got to the top but it was sooooo worth it! So much fun!!!! Didnt fancy the trek to the top again so watched some other attempt the long walk up the dune! On our way back to Paihia we stopped off at Gumdiggers park where the acient Kauri trees are buried under ground due to a 2km tsunami a very long time ago. Due to the pete where they were buried they have never rotted and kept preserved. This wood (carbon dated back to 30 - 50'000 years old is still make into furniture, so interesting! Wer also stopped off at the acient kauri kingdom where you could see what the trees had been made into. There was a sofa worth $50'000! We were all shattered once we got back to the hostel....met Sarra and Phil in our hostel and chatted to them for a while to get to know them.
