This morning both Susie and I are feeling a little concave, or is it convex.... anyway we are both starving! Our last meal seems like a lifetime ago; since the dodgy sushi we have shopped till we dropped in plastic heaven; run across Guangzhou; grabbed a salad in Starbucks; run for the busiest train in China; sat for seven and a half hours in a packed train; survived a 40 minute ride with a driver who obviously thinks he is from the Schumacher family and finally arrived at the tulou.
Now to see what, if anything, our hosts can offer us for breakfast....
I think our requests may have got lost in translation, as we ended up with a plate of cakes, biscuits and a fried egg each! All washed down with two cups of Nescafe.
Today has become known as paparazzi day as we were constantly cornered by grinning Chinese teenagers, families and groups asking to have their photo taken with us. My face aches. Eat your heart out Kate Middleton, this will be what you'll have to get used to!! ;-)
We spent the day meandering around the Hakka Earth Building Cultural Folk Village, along the banks of the stream, looking at all the different tulou. Some are round, some square; some opulent, some cluttered and rundown, but all made of earth, built by the Hakka people to defend their clan against external dangers. Fascinating.
We wondered what the tulou residents really think of having an endless stream of strangers in their homes, photographing their every move.
Yummy dumplings for lunch but then we tried to walk back along the river and were stopped by a Police Officer asking to see our tickets. As we did not have any, we had to walk about 1k out of town to the Disney style entrance to purchase some. The Policeman did kindly offer to give us a lift but neither of us fancied a ride on a moped with no crash helmet!!! Anyway, we cheated and got a ride back on the tourist bus!! We then wandered back, drinking milk tea in the sun and watching the local kids throwing banger sat each other!!
Back at our tulou, we sat in the courtyard having a beer and then ordered home cooked food - fresh veg and rice, yummy.
A quick wander revealed various pieces of street entertainment going on - a traditional Chinese opera, with, bizarrely, another stage 150yards away featuring Lady Gaga blasting out in competition and a scantily clad girl dancing! We didn't stay for long.... Chinese opera is loud and screechy and what can you say about Lady Gaga! As we neared our 'Inn', we heard the sound of drumming through the streets and saw a New Year dragon weaving along the river!!
