Strangely enough, there were lie-ins all round today. Sam's head felt a little delicate today, probably because of her age. We mooched around drinking coffee; Angie packed swiftly and efficiently while I looked helplessly at my mountain of belongings on the bed. It was a miserable day, cold and pouring with rain, which perhaps reflected our moods - tired, sad that our China trip had come to an end and sad to be saying goodbye to Sam after an amazing three weeks.
Sam suggested lunch in her school canteen which, I must admit, did not sound appealing for our last meal in China. However, this was a far cry from typical British slop on a tray. This was fresh, spicy, delicious food, all the better because it was shared with a lively group of Sam's teacher colleagues.
After (finally) squashing everything into my bags, we found a taxi to the China Hotel, where we sorted our bus tickets direct from Guangzhou to HK airport. Result. We then enjoyed a chilled hour in Starbucks, eating panninis, drinking coffee and reminiscing about the highlights of our trip.
Sam had just been remarking about how quickly Ange and I had settled in, and how we had not been fazed by anything in China, when we entered the Ladies to witness an older woman covering one nostril with her finger and blowing the contents of her nose into the wash basin. Nice. Maybe there is still plenty of room to be surprised by Chinese behaviour after all.
Slightly teary goodbyes to Sam and we were on the coach to Hong Kong. If we had been expecting any countryside scenery en route, we were sadly disappointed: The Pearl River Delta consists of endless urban sprawl. After contesting with much traffic and the usual haphazard Chinese driving, we eventually arrived at the border in
Shengzen and were booted off the coach with all our bags twice to go through the Chinese and Hong Kong border controls, the later staffed by slightly scary looking masked people.
We were then treated to a coach all to ourselves for the last leg of the journey to the airport. We had a last nostalgic bowl of noodles each while awaiting our flight to Dubai. Revealing my inner nerd, I had to take a picture of our shiny new giant airbus A380 for today's blog photo....
