Soongies' Great Adventure
With Tim (and my favourite pair of runners) now safely in tow, we could now attack our road-trip with a renewed energy. I won't tell him this but I had missed him dearly (he doesn’t read the blog so I am safe). We started the day planning the next few weeks in Scandinavia. Airbnb is certainly not immune to the region’s extortionate pricing but I back my eye for value. We then headed into Stockholm central and walked through Gamla Stan once more. This medieval part of the city is beautiful and in true Scandinavian fashion, spotless. The sun was out and my bunion was feeling good so the walk to Hermans café was a very pleasant one. Hermans is a quaint little place with a half-hippy, half-classy vibe in keeping with the city’s progressive nature. At lunch, there is an all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet full of fresh tasty salads, good bread and a chickpea curry. All this for 20 bucks in the centre of Stockholm felt like a massive win. 8.5/10 After another leisurely trot across the city our next stop was the Ostermalm Soluhall (food market). Any hope of a sneaky cheap snack went out the window at the first stall – this was not your subi fruit and veg markets on a Sunday morning. We circuited the place hoping for a miracle but none came as we left the place empty-handed. Sweden’s pricing is as consistent as it is dear, there is no loopholes, no let up, no $2 cheeseburger from Macca’s. As a reward for our hard work we grabbed a few fruity icecream ball thingies (mochi’s) from the station’s supermarket. The group verdict: slightly odd outer layer but with beautiful goodness inside – 9/10. We then retreated back to our nice little apartment and introduced Tim to the card game 'backpacker’. It was great to beat someone other than Calvin just to prove that I am truly Backpacker Queen.
