Soongies' Great Adventure
So far on our travels, we have ventured over land and sea, flown in the air or glided over mountains, been to heights in cable cars and funiculars. So it was about time we went underground. Today was the day to explore Postojna Caves in the south west part of Slovenia. In karst country, these caves are the longest show caves in Europe and were the first show caves in the world. Arriving at 11:30 am we made it in time for the 12 pm tour led by Andre, our tour guide. Postojna Cave is also the only cave in the world to feature a train to take you from the entrance through to the depths of the caves. Andre was a great guide who told us about the caves, pointed out some beautiful features including the curtains, spaghetti caves (a chamber with hundreds of thin spindly stalactites hanging from the ceiling), the 'Brilliant' stalagmite so called because it is pure limestone white, made some dad jokes and then finished up in the great concert hall where he sang a few lines from a traditional Slovenian song - he had an amazing voice and the acoustics were incredible. They host events in the concert hall from time to time (particularly around Christmas) and it would be an amazing experience to be there when they have a choir singing. A quick lunch at the 'Brilliant' restaurant and then it was off to Škocjan Caves, about 20 minutes drive away. Unfortunately, when we got there, we found out that the last tour was at 12 pm and it was already almost 3 pm! We read the brochure wrong - they have a 3 pm tour on Sundays only. We decided to come back tomorrow and go to Lake Bled instead for the afternoon. It was almost 2 hours drive away but we made it with plenty of daylight to spare, despite it being quite cloudy. A walk around the lake was a nice way to experience all 6.5 km of it. The island in the middle, the castle on the top, houses and restaurants along one side - it was very picturesque and a stunning place. Kate has deemed it her favourite lake in the world (so far). It was dark by the time we finished walking so the town lights were on as we found a restaurant to eat dinner - Ostarija Peglez'n. It was a cosy place, small but busy and waited on by one very calm man for the entire restaurant. We sat at a table with a large teddy bear between us (temporarily replacing Barnaby). Aside from the teddy bear, it felt like an English pub and we had gnocchi and risotto shared between us. It was so filling, we took the leftovers for tomorrow's lunch.
