Soongies' Great Adventure
This morning we drove the 2 hours from Lecco to Verona - a nice short easy drive. Our Airbnb was about 3km out of the centre of Verona.
As check in wasn't until 2:00 and we arrived at the apartment at about 12, we went for lunch at a great restaurant nearby - Osteria T Gella. Calvin had gnocchi entree followed by chicken and veggies and Kate just had chicken and veggies - both meals were accompanied by yummy tigella flat bread. We both had a decaf coffee to finish off the meal. When the coffee arrived, it looked like we had actually ordered a decaf macchiato - it was served in one of those really small cups and was soooo strong! Calvin added half a sachet of sugar to his and managed to gulp it down. Kate tried that too but it was still way too bitter so she ended up asking for some milk so in the end it tasted like sweet milk with a hint of bitterness. We then walked back to the apartment (which has a circular double bed) via the supermarket and checked in.
Then it was off to the nearby bus stop to catch the bus into the Verona centre - a nice quick trip. Verona is a pretty cool place to wander around - quite a few piazzas and long narrow old looking streets with lots of shops. First stop was obviously gelato - Calvin stopped another two times to get his gelato fix but one icecream was enough for Kate!
We visited Casa Di Giulietta (Juliet's house) and saw the balcony from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. We walked through to the Adige river and then pretty much did lots of wandering - we saw the Piazza delle Erbe, Arena Di Verona (an old roman ampitheatre), the Santo Stefano church and lots of other old buildings! We really loved the vibe of the place and the friendly Italians (who mostly spoke pretty good English).
We then took the bus back to the apartment. Bit of an awkward moment getting off the bus - we were sitting at the front and thought it was best to get off using the middle door so we walked to the middle of the bus but then couldn't work out how to open the door (who knows whether it was actually meant to open) so then pushed through all the people coming onto the bus to get out!
There was a Japanese place nearby so we walked there and had chicken teriyaki and beef teriyaki with edemame beans. Then we walked back to the apartment and did some washing.
