Soongies' Great Adventure
We had a relatively short drive today from Odense to Hamburg. We stopped at a petrol station cafe on the way and had goulash soup for lunch. There were loads of road works for the last 1.5 hours of the journey so it took a lot longer than it needed to! Our AirBnB host had totally forgotten we were arriving today (he thought we were arriving tomorrow) so we called him when we arrived at the apartment, after not hearing back from him earlier in the day. He felt so bad that he had forgotten - he got in a taxi from work and raced to give us the key and then he had to race back to work straight away. He was so apologetic, he even offered to refund us €25 (which he actually did!)! We then took the train into the centre of Hamburg. After getting a free Lindt chocolate that was being given away and then getting some free tasters at the lolly shop, Tim then went off to get his hair cut while Calvin and Kate went to get some more hiking shoes for Calvin (not Kate for a change) as his GoreTex shoes have split a little on the sides and are no longer waterproof. We then all met up again at 6:00 for dinner at Quan Do (the same restaurant Calvin and Kate went to when they were in Hamburg last time). Stef, Calvin's friend from Northern Ireland, also joined us for dinner. It was great catching up again and just before Stef was going to do the 100 km Hamburg March on the weekend and also jet off to Australia and NZ. Stef also told us about the 'liquorice gradient' and the 'cow gradient' in Germany. The further north in Germany you find more people that like liquorice and it gradually diminishes the further south you go. With cows, you get black and white cows up north and the further south you go, you find brown dairy cows. After dinner the plan was to go and get some waffles but we couldn't find any so we settled for icecream instead (although Kate was particularly good and had fruit instead). We then said farewell to Stef at the train station and caught the train back to the apartment.
