Soongies' Great Adventure
The drive from Wrocław to Berlin was not too difficult and we were very pleased to realise that Germany doesn't have any road tolls! And the autobahns were brilliant - driving up to 150 km/h (maybe even 160 km/h)! We crossed from Poland into Germany at Łęknica to stop at Rakotzbrücke, a beautiful bridge in Rhododendronpark Kromlau. The bridge, also known as Devil's Bridge, is made of stone in a semicircle which is reflected in the still water below forming a perfect circle. The bridge also has spectacular man-made basalt columns on either side and a few sticking out of the water behind. It was a nice place to stop and walk through the yellow forest and an excellent halfway point between Wrocław and Berlin. We also had a kebab nearby (it was so good but we felt a little guilty as we weren't eating German food). Continuing on to Berlin, we checked into our Airbnb shared apartment. It was a short walk to the underground from the apartment and we headed to Alexanderplatz where we saw the Berlin Tower (didn't go up) and bought Berlin City Welcome Cards - €20 for 48 hours of unlimited public transport and discounts on various activities. It was busy in Alexanderplatz - plenty of people having fun and we saw a few mobile sausage sellers among the millions of kebab shops everywhere. We took Bus 100 to the city centre of West Berlin - Zoologischer. We strolled around the area, past the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche where there was a large gathering (and lots of police), and near the Europa Centre. It was busy everywhere. We were getting pretty hungry by this stage so we started looking at TripAdvisor for cheap eats and the number 1 cheap eats place was Mabuhay Indonesian Restaurant. Turns out it was also number 4 out of over 8000 restaurants in Berlin on TripAdvisor. The slightly guilty feeling of not eating German food went away as soon as we started eating our beef rendang and bakmi goreng in a warm cosy hut outside the tiny restaurant. It was busy and so cheap and so delicious. We headed back home after dinner - it was getting pretty cold!
