Day 2:
Take Hong Kong, New Delhi, Shanghai and London, shake it together and place it somewhere hot and you have Singapore.
Having the luxury of traveling Asia and knowing what to expect from the cultures, people and environments, Singapore is a great surprise. It's a mix of all those factors into one: it has no identify and that is what is best at being. The Chinese, Malay and Indian populations are most noticeable from first sight, but the western influence makes a complex and unique environment.
Checking out the hustle and bustle of China town, you can get cheap drinks like fresh fruit juices or bubble tea for about 70 cents; far cry from the $8 ones in Australia.
I'm not a big shopper but somehow I end up being in them. Maybe because they are everywhere or because they provide a cool chilly break from the humid and hot weather.
The Marina Sands hotel and casino complex is a world class venue with a huge mall, casino and hotel all in one.
I had to check out the casino, lost $10, cried and left, well being on a backpacker budget that $10 was lunch and dinner, so very understandable.
I went for a long walk along the marina to the CBD and it was great: there was an Indian rapper shooting a video and I think I made a cameo!
After a long walk and a bucket of sweat, I arrived in the City core with all the bankers from around the world. Finding a Starbucks was good to escape the heat, but why I got a hot coffee is beyond me.
I decided to head back home and cool down.
Later I walked around little India to get a feel of the what the real thing is: I can say that a clean, busy, well controlled little India was a burst to the senses, so the the real thing will be some sort of smelly and chaotic euphoria beyond what I have ever experienced.
Nothing better then winding down the night, chilled out front of my hostel with a few cheap beers and soaked the bustle of little India.
