In the afternoon I headed to the massive Budapest train station, Budapest Keleti, which has arrivals coming into the large enclosed building that looks like a large hanger. Checking the internet prior to leaving, I read that as of today the ash in Western Europe is only effecting flights near Portugal and causing transatlantic flights to travel around the cloud turning a 6 hour flight into 10+ hours. On the train ride I chatted with an American who was traveling around Europe visiting friends. He went to school in Phoenix for his MBA in international business and travels the world for work. I got back to my section and noticed my camera was gone. I checked my bags and looked everywhere, and eventually got the conductor who spoke very little English. He brought me to the first room where there was a camera wrapped in a yellow bag and hidden up above, and I was overcome with relief because it was mine. From what I gathered from the conductor via limited communication, someone came on the train with no ticket and tried to hide the camera from the conductor but he stopped him. I gave him all the Hungarian HUL I had left, which was small change, and he kept saying 10 euro and I just pretended to not understand. I am appreciative he was able to stop a thief but it is also his job to watch the train. I settled back in realizing just how lucky I was, this time, and I stayed in my little room and kept the door locked. Close call!
