Cephalonia/Kefalonia Ionian Greece
14the June Skala
We love to stay in different places on the islands we visit even when like this one you can travel north to south easily in a day, around 2 hours from north to south.
Rented a car picked up from the airport, it was larger than we booked, shiny and new! As usual it was running on air so first stop was fuel from the garage a minute away. Being brand new we were rather in easy! The inspection and recording of the tiniest of scratches was very thorough!
We drove down the west coast and inland to Skala. A beautiful drive and straight forward. We immediately noticed the striking Cypress trees dotted around as we drove.
Accommodation: - Captain House Hotel, parking opposite & a fabulous little cocktail bar. Rooms modern, comfortable with a kettle and small fridge, a small balcony with a side view of the sea. Rooms were smallish. Paid 200 euros for 3 nights. Staff accommodating with a comfortable bar and cocktail bar opposite.
14/7 - Koroni Beach, Sesto Koroni Hill Bar & Limenia Beach
Our first full day I had chosen after research online and recommendations via TA to drive to Koroni beach. We made the mistake of pinning it in google maps and not checking the route. This turned out to be one of the most stressful drives we have encountered! Google took us the very long way following the main highway so instead of heading along the west coast we went inland into the hills and then back down. This was very stunning scenery however once we started to head down to the coast the roads turned to sandy tracks - to tracks covered in rocks and large ones at that!
It took us to dead ends and the last straw was basically not a track it was just rocks! We very luckily were able to turn around with me getting out of the car directing the Russ & REMOVING the larger rocks which the car would not clear! Thank goodness it was a 4x4!
We headed back to a proper road along the maze of tracks very slowly so the rocks and pot holes did not do any damage.
We are not ones to give up, did we eventually find Koroni beach? Yes of course we did! We studied the map and found the road, yes ROAD which was tarmacked virtually all the way with hair pin bends but a beautiful drive heading down the hills overlooking the sea.
The beach has no sunbeds, just the way we like it, mixture of sand and pebbles & headed straight for the sea to cool down and de-stress! We virtually had the beach to ourselves with just 2 other couples there and they left before us. The morning was spent snorkelling and reading before heading back up the hill to Sesto Hill Bar for fabulous food with glorious views of the beach and coastline.
After lunch we drove on and headed to Poros along the east coast to Limenia Beach famous for its rock formations, spending the afternoon until late enjoying the snorkelling around the formations.
Very peaceful and again the only ones on the small beaches.
Skala itself is a pleasant resort with a good choice of taverna’s and cocktail bars. It has a large stretch of sandy/pebble beach. Plenty of areas to be away from everyone or use one of the sunbeds to hire by taverna
