Can you believe we made it 25 thousand miles (all the way to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) before we got our first flat tire? Granted we have had to put new tires on both the truck and the trailer, but what a blessing to have a flat at Dennis' house rather than stranded somewhere between nowhere and nowhere else in the wide open landscape of Northern Saskatchewan.
We got the tire fixed and had a wonderful visit with Dennis and Edie. We met Dennis in Dinuba, California, at Gleanings for the Hungry 74 blogs and 7 months ago. Dennis was volunteering like us and worked with Tim and Eli on the construction of the 10 plex. It was fantastic to reconnect again so soon and to meet his friend Edie.
Edie is a fearless woman satiated with faith and courage. Her body is combating cancer but her spirit is campaigning against it with such valour that she has lived five years past the doctor's estimated "time of departure." We sat for hours listening to her story of struggles and strength, laughter and tears, and determination and concern for both herself and her boys who are still in their teens. It was like peeking over a wall into a hidden garden. We were seeing life with our very own hearts like we had never seen it before. Edie is gracious and humble, and beautifully audacious! Yet she admits it is the conflict itself between health and wholeness that has enhanced her life. If you dare to doubt, she will contend that she is clearly blessed.
Providentially, I too am clearly blessed for Edie is now part of my heart.
