We were honoured to help celebrate Kathy and Wilbert's 45th Anniversary, for which they came on this little getaway to Pismo Beach. I hope I have as much energy as Kathy when I'm 65 and a grandmother of 19! She was boogie boarding in the freezing cold ocean in a dress! I do have excellent video footage though.
Yesterday in the early afternoon we went to the Monarch Butterfly Grove and were astounded at how these graceful little creatures survive such phenomenal odds to migrate so far. They huddle together like the Emperor Penguins to keep warm and survive the winter season. For this reason they hang in clusters and at first glance look like a clump of dead leaves. Through the telescopes we could see that they were in fact a fantastic array of orange and brown wings, moving slowly and deliberately in their seasonal-sleepy-mode. When they did fly they weren't flighty and fast like usual, but floating and "buoyant" like falling paper.
We spent the evening at Hearst Castle in San Simeon and were wowed by the incredible collection of ancient art and collectibles that Mr. Hearst acquired. It was an evening tour which added an element of mystery to the whole castle encounter. The view, had we been able to see it, would have been spectacular, but the endless night sky shattered with stars was as good, if not better, than any of the over-indulged rooms of La Casa Grande.
Today was a bit of a "home" day as Tim fixed the furnace (he's so clever), the kids swam in the pool, I, of course, had my après-midi nap, and then we all went to the Street Market in San Luis Obispo. I love the energy of city night life with music, buskers, lights, the smells of all the authentic foods, the coffee... mmmmmm it was good.
