We had a good flight up to New York (Spencer slept most of the way). We arrived very early into JFK and after clearing customs we were at our hotel on 31st Street by 7:30am. Thankfully they had a room ready for us so we were able to freshen up.
Spencer was keen to kick his ball so after a shower we walked down to Madison Square Park and the Flatiron Building. We bought our Metrocards and caught the subway up to 5th Ave and 59th St. We walked past the Plaza Hotel then into Central Park. We walked past the Zoo, Summer Stage and the lake and up past the Metropolitan Museum. It was getting muggy by now so we caught a bus down 5th Ave to FAO Schwartz. Spencer was blown away by the best toy shop in the world! – Spencer wanted to get a Frisbee (no luck) but just walking around the shop was a lot of fun. We had a peak into Tiffany and Nike Town and then caught the bus back down 5th Ave to our hotel.
A bite to eat and a rest at the hotel and it was time to go up the Empire State Building. I haven't been up the Empire State Building for a long time but it's still an amazing view. To the south, the Freedom Tower and to the North, Central Park. Spencer enjoyed counting the yellow taxis - he was up to over 200 before we left.
In the afternoon, we walked over to the Highline and down to the West Village. The Highline is a new addition to the City and is a converted derelict railway that ran above the city along the west side from 31st down to the West Village. Its only been around since 2009 and is an amazing part of the city. It weaves through the apartment blocks and office buildings and you feel completely removed from the hustle and bustle of the city below.
The Highline finishes in the West Village and Spencer loved the contrast of the Village to the other high rise parts of Manhattan. I had promised Spencer that I would take him to one of Leigh and my favourite local places – Corner Bistro. It was amazing to step back into Corner Bistro as it really hasn’t changed since the last time I was in there about 10+ years ago. The Bistro burger is as good as ever and washed down with a $3 McSorleys it was as if time had been wound back to 2001.
We were still on the hunt for Spencer’s Frisbee and we thought that Toy’s R us in Times Square might be a good option. We jumped on the subway and caught the 1 train up to Times Square. Times Square was buzzing with people – we made it to Toy’s R us but no luck (we’ll try online later). We walked around Times Square which never fails to amaze – the lights dazzling and the circus of people.
It was starting to sprinkle with rain so we walked over the 5th avenue and caught the bus back downtown to the hotel. We’d been in NYC for about 14 hours and had seen a lot to so it was back to the hotel and we both crashed watching some bad American tv.
