Hi everyone,
Apologies for teh lack of photos, we are still having no joy finding a comuter letting us use the tool Sta website requires for us to mass upload photos so we will try alternative when we get a sec.
Had a fantastic time in Sri Lanka! We started off in Negombo where we took a boat for 2 hours through a Lagoon where we spotted various weird and wonderful animals such as water monitor lizards, various tropical birds and exotic plants and saw the local families living along the banks of the rivers. We came out by the sea where the area had been smashed by the Tsunami with only 1 shop left of a whole town. We then headed up to Kandy and did the cultural triangle visting various Buddist Temples and then went to Sinigira and climbed this huge rock which was pretty amazing as at the top was where the reamins of where monks lived hundreds of years ago and halfway uip there was a room with Cloud Maiden Frescos still in pretty good condition. We then headed east to Polonuwara to visit an ancient ruined city.
We dropped by Pinnanuwala to the Elephant Orphanage which was amazing watched the feeding and then 80 elephants get taken for a bathing session down the road, you can get right amongst them too which is abit daunting but a great experience all teh same. We then headed for a Massage up the road following a tour round a herbal garden where they explained what each was good for treating. I bought some green oil which is excellent for Migraines and Hangovers apparently...
Next was Nuwara Eliya which is known as little England and i could immediately see why as it was pretty high above sea level meaning it was pretty damn cold and rained alot but has alot of British influence which was apparent in the buildings and surrounding parks etc. We woke at 5:30 and visted Horton Plains which is a National park with and excelent trekking circuit, it contains some stunning water falls and a shear drop known as worlds end with some spectacular views over stunning Sri Lanka!
As the cold was taking its toll we decided to catch a bus down to Tangalle on the South coast which was hit badly by teh Tsumani but has a stunning beach, we checked in to a Cabana whcih has only just been rebuilt and was stunning, right on the beach and the staff were excellent serving up some fantastic sea food at a very cheap price! We took a Tuc tuc a few kilometres up to a protected beach where turtles lay eggs everynight, these dutch and English guys have started this as turtles are extremely endangered and they are educating teh locals trying to explain the threat as there is so much poaching going on. We were fortunate enough to see a 80kg turtle crawl up the beach, she was there for a while and crawled back to the sea, it was so amazing! We went and checked after but she hadn't laid any eggs and we saw there was a bit of wood she would have hit so she will come back in a day or so to try again. Turtles always come back to teh same beach they were born at which is amazing as they travel hundreds if miles round the world but they some sort of navigational system to do with teh earths magnetism which always makes them aware of the location of that beach but if the area gets built up with too much light, people etc they will never lay their eggs there ever so generations are being lost in this way also and they wont go to another beach, its too sad! :(
Next we laid on the beach for 2 days then forced ourselves to Unawatuna which was stunning again but a few more backpakers. We headed to a beach party one night and got drunk whcih was rare as Sri Lankans hit the hay about 9 o'clock but wake at 5 ish. This was the whole country!!!
We then visited the Colonial town of Galle which was most pleasant!
It was a welcome relief going to Sri Lanka as i have been suffering with an infection of the lower half of my right leg caused by Mozzies bites and have just had to get some stonger antibiotics in Bangkok!
We're now in Bangkok and have had a great 2 days, Dani and i went to the red light district last night where Dani visted a Go Go club with me! She didn't quite know where to look, was very funny indeed! We have been and seen some sights, been shopping and visited the most amazing Market i have ever seen called Chatuchak they sell everything here...
Its amazing how many 50 plus English and Australian men there are here in Bangok, it is actually quite pathetic seeing them in the redlight district, they are all so slimy and sleazy, flasing their Baht and the girls come running. They are all on there own aswell, i reckon the wife thinks they're away on business.. Then the next day you see them with the girls in teh shopping malls! Its not even subtle!
Going to a Thai boxing match tonight then a big club after, should be good! Bangkok is my favourite place so far! We head to Malaysia tomorrow then Borneo to miss the rain then slowly head back up to Thailand!
Hope you are all well and we miss you!
Lots of love Dave and Dani XX
