11/23/10
I woke up early this morning at around 6 am and I am not sure if it was due to no longer being tired or the fact the it seems Australia has the loudest birds in the word. A few must not have been two far outside of my A frame Bungalow. I decided to just take it easy and read my book for a while since I knew the shop I need to go on this small island would not be open until at lest 8am. After an hour and a half of reading in bed I decided I should get up and get going. I was trying to be quiet because the two girls that were sharing the Bungalow with me were still asleep. I had not meet them the previous night and by the time I went to turn in for the night they were already asleep. I then walked over to the store to get a few things and then took my time walking back. I returned back at around 9 am and the girls were up so I meet one who was had not left yet and her name was Kristen. She said that she was from Norway and in school in Sydney for these two semesters and they were currently on break. They had flow up to Cairns and rented a passenger van that would seat 8 and were traveling south with six other girls. They were all from Norway except one of the girls who just happened to be my other roommate from the previous night named Lisa from Austria. Kristen said that all the girls were about to meet for breakfast and then at 10am after they checked out of the hostel they were going to go on one of the hikes and that I could join if I wanted to. I said that sounded like fun and said I would probably join them for the hike. I put away some of my stuff and then I waiting till the girls got ready to go on the hike. This seemed to take longer then they had anticipated but I was not too bothered since I was pretty chill since I had no real agenda for the day. We ended up heading out to the hike around 11:30 am or so and we were hopeful that we would be able to find a Koala bear in the wild in one of the trees near the trail we set out on. The trial was a nice climb up to some great lookouts of the beaches around the island. We got lucky and did find a Koala bear sleeping in a tree which was very neat and this was the first one I had seen. It was starting to get very warm but it was so nice to have a strong breeze at the look out spots on the way up to the fort. We also saw what was left of a massive gun platform that was put near the top and had a gun that had a range of 20 Kilometers. I found the five girls I went hiking with to be very friendly, interesting, and good company on the hike. We returned from the hike at around 1 pm and they were planning on cooking up some food and going to the beach to have a BBQ. I decided to shave since it had been a few days and then I jumped in the pool for a bit to cool off and relax. Peter was in the pool so I just chatted with him a bit while relaxing in the pool. I then decided that I would take the short walk to the beach to see if I could find the girls I went hiking with having their BBQ. I ended up finding them in short order and sat down right as they were starting to eat. I had brought a few things so I ate my apple and just talked with them. When they were all finished they had some rice left, part of a cucumber, and a bit of sauce and they offered it to me and since I figured they would just throw it away I would eat some. I turned out to be a pretty good meal for me. They then all decided that they should go and get some ice cream and asked if I wanted to join them and I declined the invitation. No that is not a misprint I opted not for ice cream for one of the few times in my life as I am still feeling way over feed from my days on the dive trip. I then said good bye to Kristen as she left with her crew to catch the bus to take them to the ferry. I then just hung out some more with Peter and Rachael and then I was starting to get antsy know I needed to do something. I ended up opting for a evening run on Horseshoe Bay beach. The running on the loose sand was slow going but it felt good to get out and stretch my legs a bit. I maybe ran about 4 miles so nothing that crazy but it was a nice little run. I just meet my two new roommates who are from the Netherlands and their names are Paul and Stein and they seem cool. I ended up going to the bar restaurant and ordered some dinner and food and then my roommates joined me at the bar. I asked them if they wanted to team up with me and do the bar Trivia and they were game. This night a lot of people participated and maybe 12 teams played. It was four rounds with the first 3 rounds having 10 questions and the last round having 5 questions. We had a good and fun time and ended up meeting some Germans that were sat near and we had fun getting to know them. We ended up finishing in third place but the winning team took his $30 bar tab and bought us a pitcher of beer which was enjoyed.
