The journey from hell...
We tried train, we tried plane, we tried boat, and even the 'foreigners' bus. All to no avail. The only possible way to get back to Bangkok was the overnight 'V.I.P. Government Bus' - used by locals and a little more expensive than regular bus. It was VIP after all so we gave it a go.
Departure from the depo was to be about 8pm. The seats were roomy, and there was even a blanket. Before we set off the waitress (that's right!) had handed out a little snack (a strange fig bread roll and a slush puppy - random!) It all looked hunky dory.
By 9 o'clock I was frozen to the core due to the most extreme air conditioning I have ever experienced in my life. Hence the blanket.
By 10 o'clock we had been stopped and searched twice by the Police - each time they got on in full uniform shouting and balling with masks on (possibly due to the fumes, or possibly because they suspected an outbreak of bird flu as Simon pointed out!!). We think they were looking for illegal immigrants - they found none.
By 11 o'clock I had been sick ALL over the toilet cubicle - sorry. This was due to my unfortunate stomach pains caused by the malaria tablets and the fact that the driver seemed to think the coach was a rally car - over taking under taking over taking under taking all at about 300 miles an hour (I'm allowed to exaggerate - I was violently sick in a toilet with no tissue or running water! Woe is me)
At midnight we stopped for everyone to have a boiled egg and some meat at the side of the road. Come on now.
And finally, just to top the journey off, at 5am we were woken up ('Mr. Mr. last stop') as, due to speedy gonzales, we had arrived in Bangkok 4 hours before we were supposed to. Thanks.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger ey. Oh my buddha.
Thanks to Simon, and to LC for the provision of the wonderous travel pillow - without you I don't think I would have lived to tell the tale.
