So today started promising.... The weather was dry and some blue sky peeking through... So we planned a strong morning in placement followed by teaching and an afternoon sunbathing.... It went downhill considerably..... First my 2nd pair of placement shoes broke... So Kat taped them together.... I looked like a dunce! Then there was a poor patient flow, and not so keen doctors so it was a combination of chatting with JCU students... Finding some key places to go... Such as salt house bar for sunset, pier bar for drink deals and $5 pizzas and good music and ideas for the weekend since the wind is too high for the reef for example the port Douglas carnival... Palm cove beach... But have been asked by almost everyone we see to go to their cocktail party... So at $60 with all you can drink and food.... We will probably be going to that if we can get hold of tickets..! Then the consultant wanted to play with his new toy.... An electronic otoscope (a fancy gadget to look in ears) so everyone volunteered... Including me.... Mainly as I have always been intrigued by how waxy my ears are and what it looks like... Fear not, I now have seen (mini life goal achieved) but so did the rest of a&e staff and what patients were there... The response to which was.... Are you not concerned about this sophie... I think you should look into doing something about it... I did offer he could syringe them... He declined...! Then was educated by the Pom (Brits living in oz) nurses as to how much more they get paid... A claim was the equivalent in uk pounds of £40-60k.... Jesus and was told that FY1 equivalents get paid around £45k so as an SHO upto £60k dentists earning upto £750 a day as outreach dentists... Tom and I could come out here for 3 months and earn our fortune..!
So we finished for the day to sun... Yay!!! Straight to the public toilets to swap placement clothes for bikini shorts and a vest...Shoe shopping done.... $10 for a pair of shoes... Down from $40... Bargain... And they look a bit like disabled shoes... But are terribly comfortable so we shall see... Then guess what..it rained... And hasn't stopped... I'm a bit fed up of people telling me that this weather is abnormal... Jesus give me some sun.... Upsettingly it is currently (6pm) warmer and dryer in the UK than it is here in the tropics!!!
So to pass the time I played poker with the house.... I came 3rd out of 6.... Definite room for improvement!
