Yesterday we spent the entire day in Sevilla! It was wonderful. We ate a delicious breakfast at our hotel which consisted of everything both Sam and I love: yogurt, granola, bananas, and rolls. We then headed out to view the main cathedral just a few blocks from our hotel, but uh oh, the only cash I have left is a 100 euro bill, and they refuse to accept it. I ran back to the hotel and was able to exchange my large bill for a few smaller ones. Within 30 minutes I was back at the cathedral with Sam.
We wandered through the cathedral and even went up to the Giraldi Tower, 33 stories by foot! It was exhausting but extremely worth it for the view. It was absolutely incredible! When we had had enough of our first stop for the day, we headed across the street to the Alcazar Palace. This palace has been around since the 13th century! It was very different from anything we have seen since being in Spain. First of all, there was no furniture or decorations. This was kind of disappointing as we both loved this aspect of the palace we saw in Madrid. However, we were able to focus more on the architecture, which was very different with its Islamic influences. The most amazing part of the palace was the gardens. I swear we could have gotten lost if we'd let ourselves. Each section was varied from the plants to the gazebos and fountains from many different centuries. Obviously we couldn't see everything, but I'd say we did a darn good job trying!
At this point our feet were starting to become achy, so of course we started our walking tour for the day. We went to see the Metropol Parasol, a huge wooden structure just recently completed in April 2011. I think it looks like the inside of a huge beehive. From there we strolled back to the river and walked up to the neighborhood surrounding our hotel. And we BOTH got helado. Yay Sam! Once again, it was delicious. We took it back to our gorgeous hotel patio and enjoyed our ice cream with the fountain tinkling in the background.
From here we headed out to view some shops before calling it a day. I honestly think we've reached our touring limit, as we were so exhausted we decided to head to our room and watch a movie. Of course, we both fell asleep.
That night we headed out for a Flamenco show at Tableo Gallos, the oldest Flamenco venue in Sevilla. We were in the second row and had an absolutely amazing experience. There was nonstop dancing, guitar playing, and singing for 2 hours. With our tickets, we each had complimentary Sangria which we enjoyed throughout the entire show. Afterwards we headed to the center of town to look for a place to eat dinner, but as I was in a particularly picky mood, we ultimately ended up back at our hotel restaurant.
Today we woke up early, packed up, ate a delicious breakfast for the second day in a row, and headed to the train station. Cadiz here we come! Luckily this train ride was only an hour and a half, and seemed to fly by as Sam and I played the Logo game on my phone most of the way. Basically, I suck and Sam rocks.
When we arrived, we headed to the street. According to GoogleMaps, it is a 9 minute walk from the train station to our hotel; with a few wrong turns and the assistance from a wonderful woman who basically walked us to our hotel, we made it in 20. After getting checked in, we took a little rest and then headed out for the beach. Don't worry, my pasty skin was well greased up, and so was Sam. It was wonderful being at the beach, just chilling and relaxing after the past week of nonstop walking and touring, plus the view was exceptional which made the beach that much more enjoyable. We're planning another visit tomorrow!
After showering off the salt and sand, we went on a search for food. As is our typical style, we just walked and walked until we could walk no more (we're on a peninsula so we ran into the ocean). Since it was only about 6pm here, dinner hadn't really started yet and the restaurants were all closed. On the brink of starving, we walked back to the area surrounding our hotel where we knew there were restaurants open. We ended up having an okay dinner, but neither of us were able to eat very much of it as it was very rich and covered in seasoning. After much persuasion by our waiter, we took home a "goody bag" with leftovers and some rolls special for me as he saw me devour one the second he placed the basket on the table. He even put in two little packets of olive oil!
We walked through the streets as we digested our food and toured a little shopping area. I got some frozen yogurt, which seems to be the thing here, and before we knew it we were tuckered out and headed back to the hotel. We lay on the bed and flipped through the channels and what do we find? High School Musical 2 in ENGLISH! We can't quite figure out why, as the commercials and all are still in Spanish, but we are enjoying one of our favorite pastimes; one can never go wrong with Disney! Not quite sure all that tomorrow brings, but as our vacation comes to a close, we are planning to enjoy every moment!
