At breakfast, I overheard a man of Japanese decent saying he had arrived in Carson City on 5th December as part of his birthday treat (think he said it was his 50th), and he had been unable to leave. Spent all night drinking & gambling at the casino's in town.
I called the Gliding company and its unfortunately not possible for me to do the flight today as it would take too long for the pilot to get ready. Good thing really cos the weather was closing in as I was leaving and I probably would not have been able to seen so much.
I took the 395 south and then the 208 east to catch the 95 south. Actually there was a sign saying the 395 was closed further on down the road - this would have been the way to Yosemite & Kings Canyon, but they are closed due to the snow.
I passed this massive bird of prey that was just sitting next to the road. Honestly he must have stood half way up my thigh. I also passed Walker Lake which is on an Indian Reserve. The lake is rather lovely - bare along the edges, but a lovely colour. Can imagine in summer this must get very busy. Passed Hawthorne which was a huge army/naval base attached to it. I thought to hang around here looking for a dishy major, but decided against it. Also passed through Luning, Mina and Columbus Salt Marsh where the dust was blowing up a storm over the marshes. Coaldale looked like a right dump and somewhat deserted.
I stopped during the day at a Safeway (can't quite remember where it was) and bought peppered beef jerkey. I don't like it! Yuk. I'm guessing its because its smoked. They were selling peanut buttered flavoured Ritz biscuits.... wow! I did not buy any, but think they would go rather nicely with the yummy peanut buttered M&M's I love so much (yes the weight is piling on me!).
There was a 13 mile straight road which lead gradually up hill into Tonopah which is supposedly half way between Carson City & Vegas. There is not much here either apart from the odd motel & casino. I decided to stay in the Ramada hotel/casino as it had a restaurant and I did not see another advertised in town. Ugh - they smoke all over these places... in the bars & in the casino itself. Bloody disgusting! I had a drink at the bar (first wine since San Fran) & dinner in the restaurant.
