I'm now in Taupo, just waiting to do a skydive this afternoon over the Lake and volcanoes of Tongariro national park! Weather has been a bit rubbish over the last week or so. After Punakaki I went to Nwelson Lakes national park, hoping to do some walking and stop overnight in one of the huts in the mountains, however it tipped it down so instead I just went straight to Picton for the ferry crossing to Wellington. Again it was raining in Wellington so I just went round the city and had a tour of the Parliament buildings. didn't fancy attempting to hitch hike out of the city so I paid (!) for the train to National Park village. Worth it as it was a really scenic journey. Had a couple of nights at national park, hoping for the weather to clear up so I could do the Tongariro Crossing, but no chance of that so instead I hitched to Turangi for a couple fo nights. Met some people there one of whom had a car so we went and drove round the area to see some waterfalls and big gorges. Went to Tokaanu to see the thermal pools there - steam everywhere, bit smelly, lots of mud pools bubbling away. The hostel was next door to a climbing wall so spent one day climbing all day. Got a lift then to Taupo where I am now. Did a walk along the river to this big thermal area called "Craters of the Moon' - looked like a battlefield with craters and smoke/steam everywhere. Weather has now finally cleared up so today I am doing a skydive :D and then tomorrowe hopefully doing the Tongariro Crossing. After that I will be off to Rotorua, Waitomo Caves, auckland then hopefully have a couple of days left to hire a car and drive up to the Bay of Islands and to the top of NZ, Cape Reinga.
