Hampi
Arrived in Hampi after 10 hours on a 'sleeper' bus from hell. This involved climbing up into a box made just big enough for two and spending the night rattling around, being bumped up and down and trying not to fall out of the hole we climbed in through. Shaken, stirred and shattered, we were relieved to arrive at dawn in hot and dusty Hampi.
Hampi was well worth the nightmare journey though. Visited lots of intricately carved temples, set in a backdrop of huge boulders on foot and by hired bike. Ate tasty vegetarian curries and thalis with Chris and Anna.
Mysore
Managed to find accommodation which was tricky as it was festival time. Turned out to be a good thing as we stayed in a luxurious hotel for a change. Mysore was a busy and bustling town with a fantastic market. We watched incense sticks been made. The Maharaja's palace was impressive inside and out and lit up by night, as were most of the other buildings due to festival time. Spent both evenings watching music and dance shows. Enjoyed the sitar and tabla playing but were a bit confused by the Hindustani dance and drama show.
Ooty
After a bus journey of dramatic hilly views, arrived in Ooty. Were surprised to discover this beautiful little hill station was in fact a polluted, large town. Was a relief to get into some cooler air though. The weather was very different from anything before, with rain, storms and powercuts at night. Unfortunately couldn't get tickets for the 'toy train' which was one of the reasons we went, but did manage to do a good trek up and around the town to see impressive views, a tea factory and a Toda village. After a few nights we were ready for some more sun and arrived yesterday evening in Cochin - Kerala. Loving it so far - hopefully more pictures soon.
