The ferry port in Picton was only a short drive from Renwick where we had to catch the ferry from the South Island to the North Island of New Zealand. After stocking up on food at the super market, we had a hour or so to kill before catching our ferry so decided to play a round of mini golf. This game of mini golf was round three of our New Zealand mini golf experience and was definitely the best course, where Si won again much to his delight. After finishing the mini golf game we drove around to the ferry port and parked up, waiting to board the boat.
While in the que for the ferry, Si got talking to two New Zealanders who lectured him on the importance of not leaving any rubbish behind at campsites. After the twenty minute lecture had finished they gave me and Si both an apple, which at first we thought might be poisoned.
The ferry drive was only a two hours long, so we entertained ourselves by watching a few films in the television lounge.
When we finally arrived in Wellington it was getting dark and the campsites in town were all very expensive to we drove out forty five kilometers to the DOC campsite for the night. When we arrived at the DOC campsite to our surprise it was closed, so we had to drive all the ay back to Wellington to stay at the over priced campsites. The next morning we found out the camp site that we were staying at was used for a location in Lord Of The Rings, which put a smile on Simon's face. After looking around the location (The Garden at Isengard) we decided to check out of the campsite and stay at another one in the heart of the city.
That afternoon we went into the city centre and did the Wellington walking tour, that was recommended by the Lonely Planet. The tour began at The New Zealand Parliament building, named 'The Beehive' and then made it way through the shopping district. On the way we spotted one of the Wellington Hurricanes rugby players, so Si queued up for a photo and an autograph. Si looked like a hobbit next to the giant second row forward, which put a smile on my face. The next stop on the tour was the Bank shopping center. which was made up mostly off overpriced expensive boutiques. We did however manage to find the banks old volt, which had been turned into a display unit.
We took a small detour of the walking tour to take the cable car, but to the botanical garden that had a excellent view of the city. After coming back down the hill in the cable car we headed for civic square, which was a large paved area that housed many of New Zealand main museums. Through civic square and down the road we found our self in the hip and funky area that is known as Cuba Street. I managed to find a few retro clothes shops to here delight. After exploring the mainy shops we headed for the world famous Te Papa museum. The museum was made up of several exhibitions, where our favourite was the Maori meeting house exhibition. We ended up staying there for a few hours that night and heading back the next morning to make sure we saw everything, best part being it was tot tally free.
After a few more hours in the museum we went to the Cinema to watch the New Zealand made film 'BOY'. The film was out of this world and we both laughed from start to finish, at the end we both said we wonted to buy it on DVD when it comes out. The afternoon and evening was spent in Si's favourite way, sampling as many different New Zealand beers as possible in some of Wellingtons many bars.
The following day we went to watch Wellington Hurricanes Vs Hamilton Chiefs in a super fourteen game, much to Simon's delight. We collected our e-tickets and made our way to a few supporters pubs, before we took our seats for the match. Before the match started we were given free Hurricanes flags and masks to make up look like true Hurricanes fans, Si also brought there away shirt.
After I had finished perving on all the player warm up, we decided to move to better seats, near the members area. We spent the game cheering on the Hurricanes even though they were being out played and out scored. Too our delight and the other Hurricanes fans they managed to score two trys in the last few minuets of the game. After the game all the fans were aloud on to the pitch to meet the players, which was cool so we got most of there autographs.
