After nearly a week on Roatan we caught the ferry back to the mainland. The ferry was not so rough on the way back so I (Simon) got to watch some of the World Cup as I didn't have to keep looking at the horizon as I did on the way over. We had arranged to go white water rafting on the Rio Cangrejal so were picked up at the ferry port in La Ceiba by Omega tours and taken to their lodge in the nearby mountains. It turned out that we were the only ones staying there at the lodge so had about 10 staff just to look after us - who were a mix of nationalities; South African, German, English, Australian and Honduran. Many of them were just working their way around the world over many years.
The next day we got up early for our rafting trip and after a short walk from the lodge to the river, got in the rafts. The river was only just high enough for us to get all the way down but high enough for some good drops. On the first rapid our guide (Aussie Tom) fell out of the raft which was quite funny and probably would have been worrying if we hadn't known that he had pretty much rafted on every river in the world and had survived until now. The rest of the rapids were good with one in particular taking the guides extra effort to navigate (we got a photo of us coming down that one). When the river started to flatten out we kept amused by swimming and jumping off rocks into the river - some were very high. We were picked up at the bottom of the river and returned to the lodge. In the afternoon we did some hiking in the back 'garden' of the lodge in their rainforest. It was so hot and humid and we were dripping with sweat throughout the hour and a half walk. The meals at the lodge were really good and healthy but I did feel a bit at their mercy since we had to buy everything from them and there were many different taxes that weren't included (15% on most things, plus 18% on alcohol and an extra 4% on rooms). But to finish on a positive note the place was great and Katy liked the two rottweilers that the German owners kept and the toads which jumped around the place were amusing.
