Slept like a rock! First time in ages I have been sleeping absolutely solidly... Apparently it takes months and months to reach this point ;) Chatted to Giugs and ma briefly and then it was time to gear up for breakfast and a day of exploring!
We hired a golf cart- the common means of transport here- and headed south where all the "attractions" are... It was crazy to think we were driving a golf cart on an "open road" on the island of Isla Mujeres! Life is good!! Our first stop was the turtle farm... Said to be a research centre- but I have my doubts! These baby turtles were just swimming around in these pools- people were flashing away taking photos and of you showed any form of interest, a guy working at the "centre" would simply pick a turtle out of the water and offer for you to touch them and take photos... I can't believe that is good for the turtles at all! And since seeing Alessandro's school project in Sarasota about his pet turtles, I am more hen convinced these animals have feelings and are intelligent and to me these turtles were not happy :( In the outside pool, not one of the turtles was swimming around- every single one was swimming right up against the barrier that would have taken them to the open sea and they seemed like they wanted to get out... I'm no conservationist but I hated this place unfortunately... So we were out as soon as we got in! And on the golf cart we went to explore some more... We drove up many little side roads and saw all sorts of beautiful sea scenes! And we then stopped again at the Ixchel ruin but saw it from a distance- there wasn't too much to see... We did however spot many iguana's! So camouflaged on the rocks and such interesting creatures to watch... We decided to have lunch at the beautiful restaurant there- delicious fish for me once again! And then we continued our journey around the south point of the island and back up north... We drove through the town, some "suburbs", past many churches (a Catholic island this) and even stopped for a quick swim to cool down... We were a bit hasty when hiring the golf cart and went for the 24 hour option and we could easily have handed it back in by 3pm but anyways! Lesson learnt! After bit more driving (we had they cart, may as well use it haha), we settled on a beach under some palm trees and read (finished my book!!! Whoop!) and snoozed... We then walked further along the beach and settled in our spot from yesterday for the sunset show! It didn't disappoint...
We decided to take a walk up the vibey Hidalgo Avenue in town - such an atmosphere with all the restaurants lit up and people walking happily along the streets.. We settled at probably the most expensive restaurant haha but I once again had a delicious fish fillet dish... We were entertained by some very talented local street artists! And all in all had such a pleasant evening... Really love this town! We took our golf cart home and have spent the night researching ways to get to Caye Caulker from Tulum as well as accommodation there... We're more clued up but still need to make the final decisions which will be tomorrow's goal! For now it's time for bed... Ready for a new adventure tomorrow!
Lesson of the day: Do your research! You don't need a golf cart for 24 hours on an island 5 mile long ;)
Moment of the day: The harsh realization that the Mexican pesos is just about equivalent to the Rand and thus that Mexico is actually not all that cheap :)
