Caught the ferry from Dover, quite an experience, not very well organised for foot passengers (we were leaving hire car in Dover cos of cost of one way transfers), mostly well set up for trucks and cars, so after bumbling around the place we got there with 10 mins to spare and got taken by bus to ferry, but had to stop and all got off for immigration to stamp passport all got back on the bus again, to then get off again with all our luggage to go through security screening, to then finally getting on ferry. As it was our anniversary morning we found a great ‘posh’ restaurant and had a champagne breakfast – had a brilliant view of the white cliffs as we pulled away from the harbour – wonderful experience... felt very decadent... !!!
Arrived in Calais went to collect hire car, but closed from 12-2pm – very European, but were upgraded to ford Mondeo, so didn’t complain.. and the Chateau was only 30mins drive away... very very beautiful place, went for a walk around the lake and then back to room to get ready for our romantic dinner. The food was excellent and the wine was very good – had a lovely time and the best anniversary to date.
Very reluctantly left the chateau and went to Normandy, the drive was lovely, France is a very pretty clean country and the people are mostly quite friendly. We arrived in Normandy and had booked a holiday house for 3 nights, but got to room and hadn’t been cleaned, so had to lug everything back to reception and were given another room, to find that it didn’t had a bed only a sofa bed, but after checking out the other bed, the sofa bed looked better – thank goodness.
Spent the next couple of days touring along the Normandy coastline, were able to visit all 5 of the D-Day beaches and a couple of the museums. Had a few really nice walks around the village and Omaha golf course (across the road from the accommodation).
Anyways, headed off to Belgium.... talk soon..!
