We woke up to an overcast day which was ok as we planned to drive through to Queenstown today. Jean suggested that we have an egg/ham omelet cooked in the camp kitchen. That turned out to be a very interesting experience! In the evening yesterday, a large number of jet boats towed behind trucks and cars pulled into the campsite. While we were cooking our breakfast, all the boat guys (New Zealand's equivalent to good ole boys) came into the kitchen, fired up the barbies and started cooking massive great sausages and what looked like 2lb steaks. No cutlery, no plates, just grab them off the Barbie and eat them. They were a jolly bunch and were off to the Arawhata River to spend the weekend jet boating. We started off to go through the Haast pass traveling along the Haast River before finally starting the climb into Haast Pass. We had to stop for a very large slip repair (landslide) which, it turned out, was the very spot that the young Canadian couple was swept off the road and into the Haast River at least 200 feet down in the gorge in September before we arrived here. It was a very sad moment for both of us thinking about their loss and the impact on their families. We eventually found ourselves driving alongside Lake Wanaka and then Lake Hawea. Incredibly beautiful scenery! We arrived at the town of Wanaka about 1pm. It is famous for its skydiving company so I decided to go skydiving. I chose the 15,000 foot jump because it had a really long free fall. Unfortunately, when we went up, the clouds had blown in and we had to jump at 10,000 feet as NZ law prevents anyone from diving through the clouds.. What an amazing experience!! If it wasn't so expensive, I would have done it again. We seemed to stay up there forever. We then continued on to Queensland driving along the Kawarau River, which has some really large vineyards. We are again in a Top 10 campground. Tomorrow, we have booked an all day excursion to Milford Sound and we have to be up early, so I will add my pics and go to bed.
