No, it's not a cuss word in Portuguese. It's the name of the rustic little place that we're staying in while in Rio. We booked the place the day before we arrived in Rio, so you can imagine that we were a little pressured into finding a roof over our heads and had no expectations. Later, we realized we're already planning well ahead than "normal" but that's another story.
Leaving our hotel in Sao Paulo at 6.30 am, we decided to take a gamble and use public transport to make our way to the airport. If we had taken the taxi, it would have cost us about R$50 (R$1.00 = USD0.50) each to get there. By walking to the metro station, taking 2 trains and 1 bus, it cost us R$7.30 each. Given that we are both currently running low on funds (with the wedding and all), not drawing an income for 3 months and only just starting with our trip, we figured it was a risk worth taking. Thank goodness we found our way.
Upon arriving in Rio, we decided not to push our luck and hopped into a taxi instead. And it' a good thing we did - coz where we're staying, we either drive up the winding road up a hill in a taxi or walk up 174 flights of steps (that's 1 more than the flight of steps in the temple at Batu Caves). With 30 kg of luggage, that wouldn't have been fun.
As it turned out, we made quite a good choice with this place. Not that it's super-luxurious or anything like that - luxury is really not the theme of our trip anyway. I would describe it as a small bungalow halfway up a hill with a BnB thing going. The room that we got is small - even smaller than our little room in Singapore - but adequate. If we didn't know any better, we would have thought that the surrounding neighbourhood is a bit unsafe but our very helpful host, Rob, insists that it's quite safe. In his own words (while touching on wood): "We've had over 7,000 guests here and not a single one have gotten into any trouble around here". Let's hope he continues to be right.
Anyway, I'll let the pictures do the talking.
