Day 24 - 27 SihanoukvilleAn early start and another coach trip. Our destination is Cambodia's one and only beach resort in the south west - Sihanoukville or as the locals call it, "Snooky" .The journey is only broken so that the coach driver can offer bananas to the gods at a roadside shrine before throwing lucky holy water over the front of the bus. With the god of coach drivers appeased I feel much more relaxed as we undertake some adventurous overtaking moves. The plan is to spend four days by the beach not doing too much.In the Lonely Planet Sihanoukville is portrayed as a really picturesque back water but our first impressions are a bit of a disappointment as it is raining and our pre-booked accommodation, despite being described as a beach bungalow, is in fact a concrete cell set off the beach. The beach also looks very tired and full of litter because of the rain.Luckily we find that the five star hotel on the private beach next door allows guests for $5 a day to use their beach and pool and we find really nice accommodation overlooking the beach for $17 a night - bargain.Even the grotty beach turns out to be a really good stretch of beach bars at night and bbqs with the ubiquitous fire jugglers and fireworks. It really is a kick back beach backpackers kind of place where people seems to stay longer than originally planned. Some of the bars offer free accommodation for those prepared to work the bars and it looks like some took the offer up at least twenty years ago and then got too stoned to leave. Our accommodation is great and the staff are brilliant. Each evening we get back for sundowners and a chat with the staff and the other residents before heading off for bbq fish/ prawns on the beach. The rest of our time is spent swimming in the pool and the sea and enjoying hour and half long massages.
