Apologies as usual for the years between blog posts!
We're currently in Byron Bay, after Sydney but before Brisbane. We've had mixed weather so far; our first day was nice and sunny, the next two were disastrously wet - torential rain all day for two days - and then today it was nice again.
It is also quite windy, creating some messy but rather large waves - some of the surfers here are pretty impressive. There's also a seriously strong rip tide, so strong that it is impossible to stand still in the water or walk in a straight line. Fe and I attempted some bodyboarding, and ended up 200m along the beach from where we entered the water! There's a possibility that some surf lessons may be had, but we'll wait and see on that front.
Since the last blog post was from Wellington I believe, you are yet to hear any of our news from Australia. So hear it is in brief. We spent around 8 nights in Melbourne in total, the last 3 being with the daughter of one of the women we met on our first India trip; this was lovely, as we needed a break from hostels, and were able just to chill out - watch DVDs and TV, and even have a gym session!
Melbourne is a brilliant city - beautiful avenues and parks, a simple lay out with a great transport system. We didn't actually do much whilst we were there, just wandered round really and had coffee in quirky little streets. We did however do the infamous Neighbours tour, and had the pleasure of meeting the one and only Jackie Woodburn aka Susan Kennedy! We were also going to go to an Aussie Rules game at the MCG, but on the day it ended up chucking it down - instead we opted to watch the game with the family Becca and Dan were staying with, and it turned out to be a good choice as we remained dry whilst watching a very entertaining game (the one at the MCG was rubbish apparantly!).
From Melbourne we caught the overnight bus to Sydney, and once again were lucky enough to have 4 nights free accommodation, staying with Mike Gooding - no relation. We were not as fond of Sydney - many people have said that they prefer Melbourne - though the Opera House and Harbour Bridge were good to see up close. On our last night there we got a ferry over from Manly, which arrived in to the harbour as the sun was setting; for that moment, it was difficult not to love Sydney - spectacular in the evening light.
We are staying in Byron at least until the 4th, possibly longer, then will carry on up the East Coast - don't count on it, as you know what I am like, but i will try and keep you informed of where we are and what we've been up to, as well as trying to get some more photos up!
