The weather in Byron turned out to be rubbish. First thing in the morning wasn't too bad, though it looked a little cloudy and grey. I had hoped it might just stay a little grey, but as I went to get my breakfast, the heavens just opened and the rain fell. Am I in London or in Australia? Honestly. So, bang went my walk to Cape Byron and I had a little wander around town, and sheltered in a nice cafe with some juice and some hot chocolate. Before I left, I arranged with Alice and Jules to go to the cinema as there wasn't really anything else for us to do!
Luckily, Slumdog Millionaire was on at a good time in the afternoon, so we jaunted along to see it. I know I did only see it a few weeks to a month ago, but it was really good (and there wasn't anything else on or anything else I wanted to do - surf lessons had been cancelled due to all the rain) and so I didn't mind seeing it again. It was nice to have company really.
Jules and I hung out after the cinema, which was cool. We went for a walk down the beach, and the moon was extra bright tonight and also seemed really low which was quite cool to see down by the sea. It reflected nicely off the water, and we even got to see the lighthouse working. You could see the beam going around and around, obviously but it contrasted nicely with the static moon.
After that, we got a drink in a busy pub called The Rails and just had a few chats until my evening bus came along. Of course the blooming bus was late, so I had to wait around for a while for it. Then three Country Link buses came along and of course mine was the last one! Trundling my suitcase around from bus to bus, trying to find which one I was meant to get on, booooo!
It only took an hour to get to Murwillumbah, which was good, and of course it felt like I was dropped off in the middle of nowhere. Also, as we left Byron and headed further up north, the rain got heavier and heavier!! Great, more rain, just what I always wanted after several days of rain in Sydney and Coffs Harbour! As I got off the bus, the rain wasn't too bad but luckily the hostel wasn't too far away. This bus driver did know more or less where it was, which was good, so I trundled off down the road hoping that I'd get there eventually!
Did have to ask in a cafe if I was heading in the right direction, and I probably would have made it there eventually but you just never know when it's dark and you're in a new place! Yet more Ozzie streets with ending pavements - fabulous! I did remember that the hostel overlooked the river, and so as I went around the corner and saw a large-ish house just before a hill and next to the river, I did hope that was the place....and it was - yay!
Quite an old looking hostel, but also quite cosy and nice. Tassie is the guy who runs it and he seemed really nice - showed me around the place and made sure I was ok. I'm sharing my room with a Dutch girl called Froukja, and a German girl called Esther, which is cool. They're nice and friendly and chatty, which is cool, so we've been having a little laugh about the funny things in the hostel. There are interesting things hanging from the lights and the ceiling in this place - we have Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh hanging from one half of our ceiling and then a bunch of plastic orange flowers from the other side of the ceiling! In the hallway, there is a papier mache piggy, a weird yellow pelican type bird, and then there's a teddy bear that's peeking over the doorway support!
Oh, when I arrived and collected my bed linen too, Tassie said that there'a king size sheet, that you fold over and sleep inbetween. However, he showed me by using a piece of folded paper and a small bear - hahahahhahhe - cute!
There's also a bear in the lampshade in the kitchen, and several sombrero type hats at lampshades! It's a pretty cute place, which isn't very full either. Only the three of us in a 6-bed dorm, and then there are about 5 or 6 other rooms I think, but they're not all dorms as there are a couple of double rooms.
It's in a really nice place too, just on the river and you can see Mount Warning from here as well, though obviously not at the moment.
Not sure what to do tomorrow, I guess it depends on the weather. I did want to go on a trip to Mount Warning, but there are only trips every other day and on even days of the month, so I have to go tomorrow (which I'm not prepared for) or not at all! I don't think the weather is going to be that great tomorrow to be honest, so I don't think I fancy a long walk up a mountain....
