We left Nukus at about midday and drove southeast towards Khiva. The road was not very good, but we did see a fuel station with a queue of trucks! Diesel!! Or Diez-Top as its called here. After our drive to Moynaq we had used three quarters of our main tank but had our sub-tank full.
It was decision time - do we fill up here and dilute it a bit if it's dodgy, or continue and hope to find somewhere else... more reputable (!?) After meeting another group who said finding diesel was impossible, and a couple who said to avoid black market fuel because they had filled up on it, only to have to drain the tanks, we were concerned... but the number of taxibuses and trucks convinced us to fill up.The pump was interesting - never seen one like it. There was a guy in the main office who had the job of turning on and off the pump, all you have to do is know how much fuel you want!
Arriving at Khiva we settled into a nice guesthouse and took a walk around. To get into the Old City you have to pay $10 each plus a camera fee - I thought it was a bit of a rip off, but maybe we were travelling in off peak season or something. Anyway, we climbed the wall, saw the medressa's...It's a good stop off before the 10 hour drive to Bukhara in any case.
