After the hippy style relaxation available in Pai I soon ventured on to Mae Hong Son. The bus journey in itself was spectacular... the views breathtaking...the comedy use of 4th gear when 1st gear was needed... the realisation that I am ridiculously content - thanks to all of you who keep checking up on me but it's really true!
Went on the hardest trek so far with a local woman who "loves nature". She also seemingly revels in climbing up vertical mountain sides through dense foliage! Of course what goes up must come down and a large bamboo walking stick came in handy to help these poor old knees back down the other side.
The following day saw the return of the brave girl. Yes, I hired a motorbike all by myself! It started a little wobbly, with automatic gears a bit odd, but I soon revved up to a huge 70km/h!! Oh yes. Just in case you're ever in this situation - a few things to remember to ask when hiring a motorbike: 1. How do I turn it on? 2. What type of petrol does it take? Red or yellow?! 21, 91, 93??!! 3. How far does a full tank get you? In fact, how much is in a full tank? etc. Guess you get the picture. Luckily due to my fluent Thai (ahem!) and excellent gesticulations I managed to get through the whole day without running out of fuel or, slightly more importantly, dying.
After flying down to Bangkok on D.O.D.G.Y. airlines I splashed out on an expensive hotel for the night. Ah, the luxury of a bath, mini bar and non-stop movies... can't beat this travelling as a grown up thing! Next day saw me flying to Singapore where I went for the opposite end of the budget accommodation. I think we can safely say I don't like staying in large mixed dormitories. Fact. Enjoyed the sights, sounds and smells of Little India and Chinatown with a new Aussie friend of mine, Yasso, followed by a more serious visit to Changi Museum and Chapel. This is dedicated to the memory of all the prisoners of war that were held in Singapore by the Japanese. It was another sobering insight into the depravity of some human beings...
Off to the sunny land down under tomorrow. Hope you're all keeping well and enjoying these little rants of mine... please tell me if you don't want to receive them anymore!! Love you all lots, S x
