Greetings from what feels very much like the end of the world... thank goodness I know it's round or else I'd be VERY scared I'm about to fall off....
Just to make all of you feel better, especially those I gleefully boasted that I was spending a year following summer around the world, I'm cold. In fact, I'm b*?*?y freezing. I don't blame the penguins for taking off to the sea. It's far too cold to be huddling on land ANYWHERE! Luckily the layers I bought in NZ in preparation for such eventualities are coming into their own. Unfortunately every shop, cafe, hovel you walk into has their heaters on full blast so you have to dress and undress about 37.5 times a day... well, ish!
Had another comedy journey to add to the many so far. I cocked up. Big time! Got up at 5am on Monday to get to the airport in plenty of time for my 8am flight from Buenos Aires to Santiago then connection to Punta Arenas via Puerto Montt. Queued, like a good Brit, for 45 minutes to check in just to find that the flight didn't exist.... well done Qantus, Sydney! Luckily the nice man (Pablo?!) fitted me on to the next available flight. Unluckily that meant I missed the connecting flight (that did in fact exist!). This meant a 11 hour wait in Santiago airport followed by a flight to Punta Arenas that landed at 1.30am. Bargain.... I love a good 21.5 hours of being awake. To be fair my only mistake was not reconfirming my flight. As for Ken in Sydney...watch out mate. I did have some good luck though - a lovely man called Umberto that I sat next to on the plane and spoke fluently in Castellano with (now you know I'm lying!) gave me a lift from the airport to my hostel. Don't worry, his "mujer" was there to meet him too!
Spent a good day wandering around this little place, visited a few museums, spoke to a few random tourists that seem to spot I'm a tourist too. Do you think it's the blue eyes, the fact I'm 2 feet taller than everyone else or the freckles...? Hmmm, I feel like I blend right in! It's so dark here though, no wonder everyone looks depressed.
Off to get a bus to Puerto Natales now. At least I think that's the ticket I bought! Hasta leugo... maybe?!
Much Love to all, S x
P.S. Sorry if there are any spelling mistakes, can't quite make the check work in español
