Zvi Josef's Travels
13:00 update.
After a nice 8-hour long sleep, we woke up to a hot day in Xian.
We'll soon be off to explore the old part of Xian and perhaps take a trip on its ancient walls.
For the time being, we're enjoying the executive lounge (free of charge...) and having a great time.
More to come later on the day. :)
20:30 update.
Had a great day in Xian today.
First of all, we took a (very cheap!) taxi to the Forest of Stone Steles museum, which has the largest collection of steles cut in 837 A.D., the oldest existing texts of the Confucian classics, and more than 2000 engraved stone tablets from the Han dynasty.
Then we took a nice walk to the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower, which were impressive to look at from the outside, but we did not feel the need to enter them. So we ended up taking some pictures, instead. :)
We then proceded to several small malls, which weren't that exciting.
Since it was a hot day (surprise, surprise...), we went through the tourists information center to get our barrings (we've already walked some 8-9 km. till then) and to get information as to how to get to the Great Mosque. After getting a very detailed map and some explanations in Chinglish, we started walking in the Muslim quarter and got into a market. Finally!!! :) And to our amazement, the market was not crowded at all, and the merchants were not aggressive, but rather - suggestive, which was a refreshing change. :)
We bought a couple of t-shirts (30RMB each, apx. 4 US$), socks and a small fan to scare off the intense heat.
We then wanted to take a taxi to the hotel, but since it was a rush hour (19:00), we ended up walking the 2 km. to the hotel.
I then suggested to check out the lounge's Happy Hour, and indeed, we just made it - and got a complimentary dinner and drinks, plus the Internet access. Life's nice. :)
Tomorrow, we're planning to take a bus to the Terra Cotta warriors and take a bike ride around the city walls (apx. 14 km.).
Later, then. :)
