In just a few days I embark on an incredible journey that holds opportunities I never thought would be accessible to my at the age of 20. I created this blog so that I can share my experiences with you, my friends and family, during my trip. I am not much of an author-type, so you will have to excuse this as you read my entries. I plan to fill up as much space as possible with photos anyways, because I believe that they tell a much more extensive story than I could articulate. I hope that this will give you at least a glimpse of what I am doing, and maybe inspire your passions, as mine will undoubtedly be fueled over the next ten weeks.
On Friday morning I will be flying to La Paz, Bolivia, the capital of the most poverty-stricken country in South America. Through a program called Child Family Health International (CFHI), I will be interning in the field of Global Pediatric Healthcare for ten weeks. For the first 5 weeks, my accommodations will be a home stay with a Bolivian family and several other interns from the States. Each week I will be supervised by a different physician in a pediatric department of the Children's Hospital in La Paz. I have not been assigned my clinical rotations yet, but from what I understand this is going to be similar to the responsibilities of a medical students, meaning observing procedures, participating in check-ups, and learning a lot in the pediatric department of the week. In the afternoons, I will be taking medical Spanish classes, which will be incredibly useful.
For the second 5 weeks, a few of us will be flying out to a rural region in south Bolivia called Tarija, where healthcare is limited and the internship will be more of a public health experience. Here I will be supporting staff of remote clinics with providing medical care to children that do not have much access to it.
Needless to say, I am very excited as well as anxious and nervous for what lies ahead. I will do my best to blog weekly, and should be able to stay connected through email, Facebook, and skype as well. Next time from Bolivia!
