Well last night we visited an Indian restaurant and Paul had a Roti Canai (small thin pancake style patty with dahl and curry) - then went to Maharaj for a full-blown feast of curries, naans, rice, beers and lassis - it was very popular with visitors and was full- it was the hottest curries we've had yet! Despite our talk of the weather yesterday ... Overnight there was a violent thunderstorm with very heavy rain, lightning and the loudest thunder we had ever heard - we expected floods by morning but all was a little damp but 80 degrees plus by 09:30. We had a breakfast of toast, earl grey tea and banana pancake then a walk to Komtar Shopping Mall for the 204 bus to Penang Hill. The digital screen counted down the 11 mins until the a/c bus arrived. Then 4 Ringgit (RM) lighter (80p) and off we went in a/c luxury through the city to Penang Hill. We arrived in around 50mins and with no queues we were straight to the funicular! A lovely a/c angled train device with seats and panoramic glass panels (we sat right at the back window!) and as we took off for the 30 min ride the views got better - albeit a little misty in part. Arriving at the top with a mix of locals, Saudis and Aussies we snapped away. (see some great photos we took!) We took the 2km walk around the peaks and saw even better views as the weather brightened up - yet thankfully it was 3-5 deg cooler and we noticed it. We saw huge butterflies the size of birds, ants almost an inch long and lovely plants, insects and views.. (again see the pics!!) We walked back and checked out what little else was there (tacky temple, playground and wip. building) then took the return down and the bus back. We walked back and grabbed a snack rice dish (nasi goreng pattaya/nasi goreng ayam) each and loads of freshly squeezed orange juice (paul had 3 glasses!) We walked back in the increasing heat and had a refreshing relax in our a/c room...... more later..
