2 August - 5 August - UK - Spain - Barcelona - U K
Friday - After the morning routines we headed off to Gatwick airport to meet Angus for our 1pm flight. All went according to schedule & we landed in Barcelona around 3pm their time. Our apartment was easy to find & after settling in we headed off to Cafe Lobo for tapas & cava ( the delicious local bubbly). An excellent way to toast Rays birthday.During the course of the evening we explored our area La Ramblas, the waterfront & finally landed up in the Plaça Reial for more tapas & cava. R & A purchased some 'bling flashing light things' see pics & played in the square for a while .... Finally we headed to bed for some well deserved sleep.
Saturday - a very lazy start then off to the waterfront to hire electric cars ...... Very cool & an excellent way to zip around. The battery lasted a full 6 hours and was still half full on return. One of the goals of this trip was to visit the architect Gaudi's work. The 3 that he is famous for is Park Guell, Casa Batlló and La Sagrada Familia ( a basilical that is still under construction). Considering he was designing in the 1920's his work is very whimsical & modernistic using strong influences of nature.
We zoomed up to the Park & had a great walk around so got exercise as well as culture. Then we had a hilarious time whizzing around the Montjuic area where the Olympic stadium is. Angus & I had a hair raising time as there are many one way streets plus of course the Spanish drive on the right and as Angus is not known for restraint we got tooted at for reverting to driving on the left. Poor Ray following us was vaguely disconcerted.
After all this we needed a drink so Angus took us to a favourite haunt - a 'cava bar' where the drinks were cheap and the crowds horrendous. One drink was enough and we proceeded back to near our apartment for dinner. A fun filled day :)
We had another lazy morning then off to Casa Batlló - well worth the visit especially the inside which is artistic combining architecture & functionality. Very quirky.
We lazed the afternoon away at Port Olimpi enjoying the sunshine & warmth, the seaside ambience and beaches, whilst having a beer / sangria or two.
As the sun set & the crowds dispersed we wandered back through Barceloneta, found an excellent Tapas Resturant which became dinner then back to our apartment. We rounded off the weekend enjoying looking at the photos of Angus's travels.
On Monday it's was time to retrace our steps back to Lewisham and the gorgeous boys.
What a lovely birthday weekend for Ray. We had a lovely family time.
