Tofu, Mozambique
Another gorgeous morning so off we went to explore the other side of the peninsular, Praia da Barra. It's only about 10 km away and the road says 4x4 only but it was not that bad so got there quickly. Firstly went along the Lagoon side where there is an array of accommodation, some seem better days, some exclusive & gorgeous looking. We spotted some that may suit for our return trip. Then followed the road along the mangrove side where is yet more accommodation. This is mostly sand driving which is fun and the area opens out into beach / estuary. There was a dhow gracefully sailing by and some traditional fishing traps set up in the mangroves. There are sticks placed in a circle with netting between. The fish get driven into the trap by the fisherman & are stuck. Stopped at Barra Beach Resort for prawns & a beer. It's generally pretty quiet tourist wise (it is low season) but this seems to be more than that. Some have suggested it's the SA economy slowing ( most guests are from SA) or/and the constant Police requests to stop ( and bribes). The locals who work in the hospitality industry have high hopes of the new president who is very anti corruption.
Casa Barry has strong affiliations with http://www.marinemegafauna.org & do lectures 3 nights a week. We were lucky enough to catch the Giant Manta Ray talk tonight, very informative & disheartening because of the damage drift nets & local consumption make but also uplifting when there are positive steps (supported by Government) to aid the locals build fish farms & become self sufficient. The drift netting will be a lot more difficult to deal with.
