We woke up on Valentine's Day with such high hopes of celebrating in style with a helicopter ride and a hike along the glacier. Unfortunately, and not for the 1st time on this trip, the weather had other ideas and our 11:45 trip was cancelled. So we rebooked for tomorrow and tried to make the most of today.
We drove as close as possible to the Franz Josef glacier terminal and then made the hour-and-a-half round trip walk to around 100m from the end of the glacier.
Next, we visited the Westland Wildlife Centre, whose main attraction are 3 rowis. Rowis are the rarest type of kiwi bird, with only 375 in the wild, so it was great to see them up close in their semi-dark enclosure that brings these nocturnal creatures out to meet us.
We then went to the hot pools and spent a few relaxing hours between the three slightly hotter and cooler pools.
Finally we rounded off the night at the Landing Bar and Restaurant, where we had the nicest meal of our stay so far. As an added bonus, they gave us a free starter and a round of cocktails because they forgot to bring out our starter before our main course!
