After sifting through hundreds of tour options that did or did not include guided tours of the many attractions at Pearl Harbor, we went for the simplest option and just got a shuttle return from the hotel. The fact that all the tours picked up from the hotel at 6:45am and we got an 8:30am shuttle may have been a factor in our decision...
We bought a combo ticket for the USS Bowfin submarine and the USS Misouri battleship. Why any sailor would choose the cramped conditions on the submarine over the roomy, well equipped battleship was beyond Julie. We were both pleasantly surprised to be given an iPod Touch each for the audio visual self-guided tour of the Mighty Mo, where the Japanese Surrender was signed to end the Second World War.
We also watched a short film about the Pearl Harbor attacks - thankfully without Ben Affleck, Cuba Gooding Jr et al - and boarded the short shuttle ride over to the USS Arizona memorial. This is the only victim of the attack still buried in the harbour after an armour piercing bomb detonated the on-board armaments and totally destroyed the ship. Most of the ships that were sunk were recovered, rebuilt and sent into the fray in the Pacific.
After returning to Waikiki, we ate at Chijis and then went to the country and western bar next door, Nashville's, since Dean wanted to enter the pool competition. Due to a crazy competition format, Julie beat Dean into 3rd place and won a $10 drinks voucher. As the picture shows, Julie was not put out one bit by the hollow-ness of her victory...
