On the 23rd August I made my way back to Incheon Airport ready for another adventure- Tokyo, Japan!!! I decided it would be a good idea to rent a phone to use in Tokyo to contact Philip and Terre who I would be staying with for the next 5 days-luckily I did! Arrived at Narita airport and headed downstairs to catch the train into Tokyo which was suprisingly very easy! After about an hour I arrived at Shibuya station in the heart of Tokyo and was lost within 5 minutes hahaha! Philip had told me to head to the West gate where he would pick me up as they only live 10 mins away. Luckilt I had rented the phone so gave him a call- so he gave me some Japanese to ask someone where to go. As I came out the exit (pissing rain I might add) I was instantly blown away by just how many people there was. I was just minutes away from the famous Shibuya crossing- though I didnt realise it at the time because I couldnt see a meter in front of me because of the crowds. So next challenge, find Philip- never met him before so I had no idea who I was looking for! Phone came to the rescue again!
Philip took me back to his house to meet his lovely wife Terre and son Callum. They have a lovely big american style house just 10 mins from the crazy shibuya. I was just happy to see an actual house!!! driveway, front door, carpets and heated toilet seat! The works hahahaha! How exciting! They also have a lovely little japanese rescue dog Shiro who followed me around :-) So my first night, Philip and I headed back into Shibuya to a few bars then into Roppongi to try to find the Cavern Club where I would be going to see The SIlver Beats- japanese Beatles tribute band.later in the week. Couldn't find it however so headed to an irish bar for a pint of Magners!!! I was a very happy girl! Hadn't tasted yummy cider in 5 months! The night got even better when Philip decided to take me for a Donner Kebab hahaha! It's funny the things you get excited about when your away from home hahaha! Amazing! We called it a night just before 12 to catch the last subway home and I was relieved to find it was quiet as I was told by philip that when it's busy there are guys employed to squash as many people into the carriage as possible! eeeek! Have to say I was a little excited about getting to my bed too as I had a double bed! Wow! :-)
The next morning we all headed to Harajuku, in the rain! Harajuku is very famous for the crazy fashions and people dressed up like anime characters on a sunday. However we didnt see many because of the rain ;-( It's an area between Shibuya and Shinjuku (where Lost in Translation was filmed) and the atmosphere in this place is just amazing! We first headed to Yoyogi Park- one of the biggest in Tokyo hoping to see some Rockabilly dancers-but just my luck they were all hiding from the drizzly rain! There was a festival on though so got to see some traditional dancing and crazy costumes so we watched the parade for a while before heading to Harajuku's famous street. It's quite a narrow street so as you can imagine it's just wall to wall people. Some of which were the harajuku girls- dressed in strange and outrageous outfits luckily a got a few sneaky snaps and 2 girls posed for a pic for me. Apparently on any other sunday there are usuallt hundreds of these girls dressed as japanese characters and maids or just in generally bizarre clothes. We popped in to a few traditional shops and came across a gorgeous purple kimono- couldn't resist!! Also got mum and dad a lovely Saki bottle set for their anniversary! Our next stop was Akihabara- tokyo's "Electric Town". There are streets and streets of shops selling every electronic gadget you can imagine and all at cheaper prices. I seen a 500GB external hard drive for just under £50- totally regret not buying it!!! The computers on show in these shops were amazing! We also saw hundreds of gaming houses, the famous video game hangouts filled with youngster who spend their day there! Mad! Before we knew it it was already late afternoon so philip and I couldnt resist another donner kebab! hahaha! I was led astray! After a good walk around we headed back to put our feet up, chill out with a glass of wine and a lovely dinner- Chilli and tortilla chips! Yum! Stayed in that night and watched a movie.
