Ushuaia, Argentina
Well the great tour is under way. Arrived in BA 5 days ago. Spent 3 nights at a hotel, getting over the jetlag and wandering round doing some sightseeing. The yesterday flew down to ushuaia where my antarctic cruise will leave from in a weeks time. Readjusting slowly to the trauma of being in a hostel dorm. Today I went to the Ushuaia maritime museum in the morning as I'd signed up for a tour in the afternoon. Museum is in an old prison so has stuff about the history of the prison. It was ok but a bit of a rip off price wise. But the afternoon more than made up for it. went on a 'pira tour' tour which involved a 1.5 hour drive along a mostly untarmacced road. We then jumped in a wee boat for about ten mins. we arrived at the island to be greeted by the sight of hundreds of penguins. We landed on the beach for a walk round amongst the penguins. We were not allowed to touch them of course, and were told to keep at least 3 metres away. But they are wild animals and although we kept to our designated path there was nothing to stop the penguins wandering across the path. So we were often just a foot or two from all these penguins.as long as we didn't move too fast or make too much noise the penguins were pretty fearless- it was an amazing experience. planning to head up to a nearby glacier tomorrow.
