Siem Reap is not as big of a city as Phnom Penh but it is bursting with foreigners mulling around the old market. Our tuk tuk driver from Phnom Penh arranged for his friend to come and pick us up (free of charge) at the bus station and bring us to our hotel. Now, as naive as I might be I at least understood that the "free" ride from the bus station would most likely have a catch. The catch, however wasn't that bad. We arranged a day with him to take us to the temples for 20 bucks. A little pricy but the convenience is worth it!
We were slotted to see 4 different temples, but got "templed out" after seeing the third. First we went to the main temple of Angkor Wat (which was huge and has a massive moat all the way around). We ended up getting a somewhat forced guided tour from this guy named Kun, or something like that. It was very informative but after thirty minutes of the tour he quoted us a twenty dollar fee! Needless to say...he got 5 bucks and was sent on his not so merry way!
The rest of the temple was enjoyed at a slower pace with plenty of time to take pictures and explore.
After Angkor Wat George, our tuk tuk driver, took us to the Angkor Thom temple. This one was my favorite I think. It was surrounded by dense vegetation and looked really mysterious and ancient (go figure right)! Haha! Not to mention that there were wild monkeys lining the road up to the entrance! The temple grounds were very spread out and had huge pillars with faces carved in the sides. I was particularly fond of the carvings of the King's dancers you could see all over the walls. You guys will all see the million pictures I made Shawn take!
After that it was on to the third temple called Bayon temple. This one looked really old and run down. The trees had pretty much taken over, and the walls were all tangled in massive roots and vines. I wish I could say I'll show you pictures but our camera died at the end of the previous temple. We weren't to upset about it though, the temples all had the same feel and we had gotten some great shots already. After walking around and finding George again, we decided to call it a day and find some food. George brought us back to the hotel and we made arrangements to move to the resort we'd booked earlier. And as for telling you about the fun at the resort...I'll leave that for another blog!
